Through visual communication and design-based research, Carmela Wilkins approaches design beyond aesthetic consumption, opting instead for inclusive and purpose driven creative strategies. Her passion for environmental justice and using design to elicit change in vulnerable communities, has led to work with non-profits on redesigning their services, showcasing work in Finland on humankind’s relationship with nature, and researching the intersection of foodscapes, identity, and the African diaspora. When it comes to food, Carmela truly believes it is a resource for survival that is in constant flux. A craft in and of itself, ready to be shaped by anyone or thing that comes into contact with it. Yet, what interests her is food’s multi-faceted role within accessibility, privilege, and positionality by design.
